About the Substance Use Navigator (SUN) Program

As alcohol and drug addiction continue to increase in Ventura County, those suffering are receiving the compassionate support needed to enter treatment, thanks to Adventist Health Simi Valley's Substance Use Navigator (SUN) Program. Acting as a trusted patient advocate, the Navigator addresses the “why” of addiction without judgment so patients can learn better ways to cope with past traumas.

As alcohol and drug addiction continue to increase in Ventura County, those suffering are receiving the compassionate support needed to enter treatment, thanks to Adventist Health Simi Valley's Substance Use Navigator (SUN) Program. The Navigator meets with patients in the emergency department and other hospital units who have overdosed or are going through withdrawal. Acting as a trusted patient advocate, the Navigator addresses the “why” of addiction without judgment so patients can learn better ways to cope with past traumas. Physicians also provide patients with medication-assisted treatment to treat withdrawal symptoms and prevent overdose.

Before discharge, patients are connected with a substance abuse treatment facility for additional care. To further promote patients' healing, the Navigator continues to follow up and remains available 24 hours a day for additional support.

Outside of the hospital, the Navigator visits homeless encampments and participates in community events to encourage those suffering from addiction to visit the emergency department to begin treatment.

To ensure this influx of patients continues receiving the help they need, the hospital is seeking additional support for this vital program. Adventist Health Simi Valley aims to raise funds to support our Navigator's wide range of efforts both inside the hospital and in the community.
